ARMADILLO Highlights LGBTQ+ Forensic Bias Research at ISA Forum 2025
Between July 6–11, 2025, the ARMADILLO project was represented at the 5th International Sociological Association Forum 2025, which took place in Rabat, Morocco, through its partner, Sinopsis Innovation. During the event, Eri Eleftheria Papadopoulou and Georgios Chatzichristos presented the research study “Addressing LGBTQ+ Bias in Forensic Evidence for Sexual Violence Cases” as part of a thematic session focused on LGBTQ+ rights. The presentation highlighted key findings from ARMADILLO’s multi-method research, which integrates literature analysis, policy context review, and interviews with EU-based experts. It examined the gendered and systemic biases that affect the collection, interpretation, and use of forensic evidence in sexual violence cases involving LGBTQ+ individuals.

A key focus was the role of Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB), a drug often associated with sexual assaults against gay and queer men. These cases are frequently misinterpreted or inadequately addressed due to gendered assumptions, heteronormative frameworks, and the lack of inclusive forensic protocols. LGBTQ+ victims are particularly vulnerable to such biases, leading to the mishandling of evidence, insufficient toxicological testing, and ultimately a failure to access justice.

The session allowed us to present gender-sensitive recommendations for reforming forensic procedures, incorporating inclusive training for professionals, and adapting legal frameworks at the EU level.
